Introduction to Humanitarian Deployment (26002)

A short seminar aimed at new and prospective humanitarian practitioners as a primer on the fundamentals of humanitarian action. Each session includes a Question-and-Answer session with an experienced speaker to provide a unique perspective on the realities of deployment.

  • A primer on the different types of intervention around health, food security, WASH, and shelter.

  • The standards that humanitarian practitioners should abide by.

Trainers

Muchsin Dahalan

Muchsin is a humanitarian trainer and field practitioner with extensive experience in disaster response, volunteer preparedness, and experiential learning.

He has participated in multiple humanitarian deployments across Asia and Africa, supporting needs assessments and WASH operations in disaster responses in Mozambique, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Philippines. These field experiences shape his training approach and help volunteers understand the realities of humanitarian operations.

Muchsin currently serves as Senior Manager for Training Assets Development at Outward Bound Singapore, where he designs and delivers leadership and field-based training programmes focused on resilience, teamwork, and decision-making in challenging environments.

Muchsin also contributes to humanitarian training initiatives and has supported programmes preparing volunteers for overseas disaster response, including serving as a Psychological First Aid instructor with the Singapore Red Cross Academy.

He holds a Master of Community Leadership and Social Development from SIM University, Singapore, and a Bachelor of Sports and Outdoor Recreation from Monash University, Australia.

 

Nadim van der Ros

Nadim van der Ros is a dedicated humanitarian with over a decade of experience working with social organisations and has been volunteering with Singapore Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and the SAF Volunteer Corps. He is an ALCP-certified trainer and facilitator, volunteering as a first aid instructor and Overseas Disaster Deployment Training trainer for Singapore Red Cross. He has led humanitarian missions to Batam, Sri Lanka and Egypt. He also serves as an Auxiliary Security Trooper for the SAFVC and leads an active extra curricular community for that body.
