FLAW Check

Conduct a FLAW check on each participant (either Team Leader or Assistant Team Leader)

1. Footwear

  • Check participants’ footwear to make sure they are wearing adequate footwear. At a minimum, trainers. No flip flops or sandals.

2. Load

  • Check what load the participant is carrying and note this for your reference.

  • Ask whether they have carried this load before, are progressively loading, or are not familiar with it at all.

  • Check whether the load is appropriately packed.

3. Aid

  • Check if they have any medical conditions that will affect their participation.

  • Note down any medical conditions that they inform you of in the embarkation report.

  • Ask if they are carrying medication for any medical conditions.

  • Check if they have a first aid kit on them.

4. Water

  • Make sure they have sufficient water for the hike.

  • Ask them how much water they have on them.

  • Note their water down as it may impact break timings and rest locations.

Based on the information they have provided, you must evaluate whether they are:

  1. Good to go. No issues.

  2. Needs Monitoring. Some issues but keep an eye.

  3. Needs Adjustment. Has issues that will require adjustment to the route.

  4. Not good to go. Has issues that can’t be fixed by them or a route change.
